‘Shameful record’: Djokovic saga sheds light on Australian border policy

Although Novak Djokovic is no longer held at Melbourne’s Park Hotel, “hundreds of people” remain left behind in indefinite detention, according to Human Rights Watch Australia’s Director Elaine Pearson.

Ms Pearson discussed the organisation’s annual world report, which drew attention to “Australia’s shameful record on its treatment of asylum seekers and refugees”. 

“We have people who’ve been shunted around from one centre to another – from Manus Island to hotels in Melbourne for eight years now,” she said. 

“Why can’t the government do something to at least alleviate the plight of these people who are already in the country?”
