‘Give pubs a fighting chance’: Calls for beer tax to be cut

The federal government is being urged to cut the taxes on beer, after data showed 40 million fewer pints were sold from July to September in 2021 than the same period in 2019. The Brewers Association of Australia says there are concerns the government will bring in one of the biggest beer tax increases in over a decade. John Preston, the organisation's CEO, has called on the Morrison government to give pubs and clubs a fighting chance after the industry was decimated by the COVID-19 pandemic, with beer sales having dropped more than $1 million in 2020 and 2021 figures expected to be worse.
