China using ‘checkbook diplomacy’ with Tongan aid

China is looking to use “checkbook diplomacy” with their promises to help Tonga’s recovery effort, according to ANU’s Professor John Blaxland.

“It’s thrown $100,000 in promises to the response, to the Tongan crisis,” Professor Blaxland said.

“It’s talked about deploying aid.”
