The Liberal victory at last year's Tasmanian election has the government hopeful it can gain ground on the Apple Isle at this year's federal poll.

The Liberal Party is trying to avoid the candidate controversy in the seat of Lyons that derailed its campaign against Labor's Brian Mitchell last time around.
