Scott Morrison could step in over NSW Liberal divide

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has threatened federal intervention over a factional brawl engulfing New South Wales Liberals which could hurt the party's chances at the next federal election.

The dispute, which Mr Morrison has called "factional rubbish", has ensnared Immigration Minister Alex Hawke, Environment Minister Sussan Ley, and MP Trent Zimmerman.

It follows leaked text messages between former Premier Gladys Berejiklian and another politician calling the prime minister a “complete psycho”.

Cabinet ministers blame a factional brawl in the New South Wales division for the leak. 

They believe a battle for preselection candidates ahead of the upcoming federal election triggered the leak to undermine Mr Morrison. 

The prime minister says he was confident the minister said to have made the remarks was not in federal cabinet and there was no need for an investigation.
