Princess Irene of Greece is ‘gradually fading away’: Sister Queen Sofia of Spain cancels all engagements to rush to be by her side

Princess Irene was born in South Africa, where her family were living in exile following the outbreak of the Second World War, on 11 May 1942. Her godparents included Queen Mary of the United Kingdom and Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent. A virtuosic pianist, she studied under Gina Bachauer, dubbed the ‘Queen of Pianists’, and played many concerts herself, including one at London‘s Royal Festival Hall
