A man has been charged after Australian Border Force Officials allegedly found child abuse material on his mobile phone at Brisbane Airport.
The 73-year-old was intercepted after arriving on a flight from Port Vila, Vanuatu.
He was charged with one count of importing a Tier 2 good, namely child abuse material, contrary to section 233BAB(5) of the Customs Act 1901 (Cth).
A full forensic examination of the mobile device is ongoing to determine the exact nature and number of files allegedly contained on the device.
ABF Investigations Superintendent Amanda Coppleman said detecting child abuse material at the border is critical to protecting children from harm.
“ABF officers are highly trained to identify risk indicators and will act decisively when this is detected at our border,” Supt Coppleman said.
“Each time this abhorrent material is detected, it disrupts its circulation and helps limit the ongoing harm experienced by young victims.
“There is no place for this vile material in Australia, and we will continue to work with our law enforcement partners and use all available powers to detect, disrupt and bring offenders before the courts.”
He faces a maximum 10 years’ imprisonment if found guilty.
