Major change for King Charles as Sir Clive Alderton, his right-hand man for 20 years, prepares to step down

In 2022, Alderton was knighted by the King in the surest sign yet of the monarch’s affection for the man who has been by his side since 2006, a year after the then-Prince Charles married Camilla in 2005. In the decades that followed, Sir Clive worked his way up to the very top of Palace circles – not bad for a man who is technically a diplomat who is on secondment to the Royal Household from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
