NSW teaching sector ‘facing a perfect storm’

NSW Teachers Federation President Angelo Gavrielatos says the teaching sector is "facing a perfect storm". 

This comes as teachers in New South Wales are walking off the job today, striking over staff shortages and salary.

"The teacher shortages are just too large and the underlying causes - uncompetitive salaries and unsustainable workloads - too great for our protest action not to proceed," Mr Gavrielatos told Sky News Australia.

He said the issues are set to grow, with the government "in a state of denial" over the shortages and their causes.

"We're facing a perfect storm - we've got an ageing teachers service, a massive increase in student enrolments over the next 20 years - 200,000 additional students - and on top of that, a 30 per cent decline in the number of people entering teacher education," he said. 

"This is a perfect storm, noting that we will need 11,000 additional teachers in the next 10 years; the government knows the cause of the problem and then by definition, the solutions required."
