Here We Are review: Stephen Sondheim’s final play is a surrealist apocalypse in monied Manhattan

Yes, this is a weird play set in a godless Manhattan. When the gang meet a bishop, he laments that he is awful and his job and begins seeking alternative employment. The Shiva who watches over Claudia’s children is not the Hindu deity, but the name of her nanny. As with Into The Woods, Sondheim asks what we do with ourselves when we lack a guiding principle – God, a narrator – and are forced to confront the fact that we are simply here, the sheer absurdity of Being Alive.
