Oakley’s film is beautiful, too, shot in a naturally diluted light reminiscent of Joe Wright’s 2005 Pride and Prejudice, with its soft skies and washed-out greens. In this respect, it feels more Brontë than Austen. Marianne does have a great deal of Cathy about her. There is a heightened romanticism here that Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights might well envy.
